Therapeutic Riding, Inc.

Therapeutic Riding, Inc. is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization which provides the opportunity for personal growth through the horseback riding experience to children and adults with disabilities in Washtenaw County and surrounding areas. Our mission is to provide a therapeutic environment through horseback riding and other activities for people with disabilities or other challenges.

In 2015, 70-80 riders participated in weekly lessons and other regular programming. Our riders range in age from 4 to their 80’s, while 70% are under age 18. Individuals are welcome to begin lessons at 4 years old and may continue for as long as they are able and it is medically safe.

We serve people with diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Traumatic Brain Injury, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and many others. While our current riders come from Jackson, Monroe, Oakland, Saginaw, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties, welcome riders from all countries.

The Sam and Juliana Zirinsky Memorial Scholarship fund is available to riders in need, ensuring that finances are never a barrier to participation.

Classes & Community Offerings

Class offerings include: riding lessons – group, semi-private, and private; ground lessons – showmanship, and grooming/tacking; summer camp; partnerships with medical facilities (eg. University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital Milestones program, Special Tree Rehabilitation System), and continuing education for volunteers. In 2015, almost 400 individuals from the community participated in TRI’s Day At The Farm programs, tours, Open Houses, and other special events.

In 1984, we attained nonprofit 501(c)(3)IRS status and became incorporated as “Horse Riding Therapy”. Then, in 1985, our name changed to “Therapeutic Riding, Inc.”. We are currently a member of Center of PATH, Intl. (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, Intl.).

In 2010, through an agreement with the Legacy Land Conservancy, we purchased 46 acres of land and built our custom designed facility exclusively for therapeutic horseback riding and other therapeutic equine assisted activities. Our facility provides: heated 60’ x 120’ indoor arena, observation room, offices, meeting rooms, 20 stalls with heated automatic waterers, 100’ x 200’ outdoor arena, 46 acres, of which 13 acres are fenced pasture, and six dry lots with automatic waterers.

TRI is 100% community supported through donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations. We receive no federal or state funding.
